Cocktail Rings In Fashion Again by Lee MacRae
Ever heard of a "cocktail ring"? During prohibition in the United States in the 1920's, when alcohol was outlawed, illegal cocktail parties were all the rage. And the ladies who attended these cocktail parties wore large, over sized, flashy rings when they attended one. I guess you could say they flaunted the law with style!
The original "cocktail ring" was normally made with a big flashy diamond or other precious stone to really show off your style! It became very popular again in the 1940s and 50s with major female movie stars of the age wearing them as part of the glamorous outfits of the day.
These days you see large fancy cocktail rings at the "haute couture" fashion shows, at major events like the Emmy awards or the Oscars or on the red carpet at major movie premiers. Some of the ones worn at these major events cost into the millions!
In the past some famous vintage movie stars wore some very fancy and expensive cocktail rings as well. Vivien Leigh's cocktail ring was created from one .71 ct center diamond and 24 beautiful diamonds in a stunning sterling silver setting!
Cocktail rings are worn on any finger [except the ring finger on the left hand that signifies engagement or marriage] and often worn on the right hand. These rings have really started to gain popularity once again but with a bit of a difference. With the growing concern about "conflict diamonds" many people have taken to buying ones created from semi-precious stones instead.
If you decide to buy a cocktail ring keep in mind that you want one "focal" stone as the center piece. Any other stones in the setting should complement the main one. Also consider choosing stones that are darker in color as these will work better with your fall season wardrobe. And don't buy cubic zirconia, the low cost substitute for diamonds. They tend to make these types of rings look cheap and gaudy and you don't want that.
And keep in mind that the cocktail ring isn't meant to be subtle. This is a real "woman's" ring meant to flaunt your style. Go for it girl!
